In "Fuzzy Thinking," Bart Kosko tells us about the "New Science of Fuzzy Logic."
What is Fuzzy Logic? Well that's not the easiest thing to say. Its showing up all
over the place but as one might expect only Fuzzy definitions are possible when
talking about Fuzzy logic or even Fuzzy Mathematics. Perhaps, though, its like
this, in linear algebra, geometry, and logic, it is assumed that we live and exist
in a strictly linear reality and universe. Relativity Theory and Quantum Physics,
however, suggest that we don't. Perhaps then when engaging in Math or Logic
that instead of assuming an hypothetical absract linear world as normative, instead
we should assume one that is probabalistic. Instead of solving for a math
equation that is 2x+3=11. What if (p) stands for probabalistic, and then the
equation must be solved as (p)2x+(P)3=(p)11. Of course what (p) really is in the
real world is going to differ depending upon the probability coefficient assigned
which is derived from either inductive or deductive reasoning, playing around with
any available data and of course the standard deviation which one assigns as
normative. It is precisely these types of questions and explorations that
Bart Kosko sets us off to explore in our minds and imaginations. A very
interesting book.
