In what Robert Rankin calls the seventh part of a trilogy (which, to be honest, tells you all you need to know about both the author and the book), the battle of Good vs. Evil is going into its upteenth round. Only this time, the unlikely battleground is the rather disappointing Brentford United Football club: if the BUs can manage to win the FA cup, Evil will be thwarted. Unluckily for the forces of Good, Brentford United has let down the town quite a bit in recent history and their new manager, in the shape of what can only be styled the Village Idler, does little to inspire more confidence. Evil, on the other hand, will have to deal with some expert backing our anti-hero. Little surprise then that things don't work out the way that either side has expected...

The first Robert Rankin I've read, it had to fulfil rather high expectations. But it certainly has. It's a very enjoyable book, in quite a crazy way. Not the kind of book I need to keep, but one I liked reading and that will have me read other Rankins too. Incidentally, there's a slightly different review on my non-BC book I've read journal.
