I got this book from a generous Brooklyn FreeCycler specifically to share
with others through BookCrossing.com.

Welcome and Congratulations!

You've not only found a book, but also a wonderful community of readers and book lovers who think our books should be "out there," not gathering dust on our shelves. We register our books at BookCrossing.com so we can keep up with where they go, who reads them, and what people think of them. We release books "into the wild," trade books, and discuss all things bookish on our forums.

If you like the BookCrossing concept, you might want to register a screen name (no one is ever given your e-mail address), so that you can keep up with this book, and maybe release others. Or you can journal this book as Anonymous Finder. It's all perfectly safe, confidential, fascinating, and fun. If you do join, please tell the BookCrossing powers that be, that MarysGirl sent you their way.

This book is now yours to do with as you wish, but I hope choose to pass it on.

Thanks and Happy “Crossings!”
MarysGirl

From the back:

"Meet the Ganguli family, new arrivals form Calcutta trying their best to become Americans even as they pine for home. The name they bestow on their firstborn, Gogol, betrays all the conflicts of honoring tradition in a new world--conflicts that will haunt Gogol on his own winding path through divided loyalties, comic detours and wrenching love affairs.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for her story collection Interpreter of Maladies, Jhumpa Lahiri brilliantly illuminates the immigrant experience and the tangled ties between generations."

My review:

This one's been on the shelf for a while. I got it from a FreeCycler two years ago and had just seen the movie. I probably would have passed it on without a read, except I heard the author read one of her short stories on an NPR radio show ("Selected Shorts" produced by WNYC). It was a beautiful story and reminded me of the book, so when I needed another commuter book, this one went into the back pack.

And I'm glad it did. Although I was very familiar with the story (the movie followed the plot closely), I loved the language and description Lahiri uses. The actual story is not much different from any immigrant family's, but the small details illuminate this book and make for lyrical reading. I recommend this one and might set up a book ray.

Just finished reading this book. I've also seen the movie so knew what was coming up. The movie remained quite true to the plot of the book. Even so I had a hard time putting this one down. I've immensely enjoyed all of Lahiri's books I've read so far.

Thank you very much, biisbsw, for sending me this wishlist book for my birthday, together wit a lot of other nice things.
I am very curious for this one: I've never read a book by Lahiri. Will keep you posted as to what I think of this one. (May take a while before I get to it though..).
