I started watching "All My Children" with my lunch buddies in the mid to late 1990s because NBC moved "Days of Our Lives" from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. One of the lunch buddies had been watching AMC since the show debuted in 1970, so she tried to catch us newbies up on the back story as much as possible. However, back stories can be very convoluted on soap operas, and plot points can be forgotten after 20+ years, so it was nice to read this book and finally know how it all started.

This book covers the first two years of AMC's run, from 1970 to 1972, and there are many characters who are still a major part of the story today, notably the Martins and, of course, Erica Kane. It's a little dramatic and over the top--that's to be expected--but AMC didn't shy away from exploring the social issues of the day like the war in Viet Nam, alcoholism, and abortion.

I have two more books in this series and they should prove equally as interesting.

Looking forward to reading these. I think Tara and Phil were the reason I started watching the show sooooooooooooooooooo many years ago. Now, with work, it is kind of hit and miss. But it remains one of my favorite soaps.
