The Wandering Fire (The Fionavar Tapestry, Book 2)

Book jackets are fond of comparing the latest fantasy to the works of J.R.R. Tolkien; however, in this case, I think you should credit it. Not only is the fantasy world as good (or better than) Tolkien's, the story is made far more accessible by having us follow five university students as they heed to call to travel to Fionavar, "the heart of the first of all worlds," to take up their destinies in saving that world and ours as well.
Second in the trilogy known as "The Fionavar Tapestry." Best if read in order. Preceded by THE SUMMER TREE, and then finished in THE DARKEST ROAD. Author Kay was one of those rare few who helped edit Tolkien's THE SILMARILLION, and thus knows of what he speaks. Now that is true bona fides!
