The Haj

The village of Tabah had a timeless, Biblical quality. It stood on a knoll in the valley where Joshua had beseeched the Lord to make the sun stand still. Little changed from one Arab generation to another. And then came the Jews, reclaiming a nearby swamp and proving that they could defend themselves in a hostile atmosphere. After that, everything changed forever.
This is going to a friend
This is a well told tale of the makeup of the Arab mind. The Bedouin and the Wahhabi are the central focus of this story of a man and his family as they endure the hazards of internal war between the Jews and the Arabs. It is an intimately told story of an Arab deeply steeped in tradition and of his only friend that is a Jew and part Arab. The story predominantly covers the space in time of 1920s to the Arab war of 1956 where Nasser of Egypt led the people in a failed war against Israel. A very poignant story that is very well written. Very good read.
