Candy Girl: A Year in the Life of an Unlikely Stripper
8 journalers for this copy...
BACK COVER: "Decreed by David Letterman (tongue in cheek) on CBS TV's The Late Show to be the pick of "Dave's Book Club 2006," Candy Girl is the story of a young writer who dared to bare it all as a stripper. At the age of twenty-four, Diablo Cody decided there had to be more to life than typing copy at an ad agency. She soon managed to find inspiration from a most unlikely source— amateur night at the seedy Skyway Lounge. While she doesn't take home the prize that night, Diablo discovers to her surprise the act of stripping is an absolute thrill.
This is Diablo's captivating fish-out-of-water story of her yearlong walk on the wild side, from quiet gentlemen's clubs to multilevel sex palaces and glassed-in peep shows. In witty prose she gives readers a behind-the-scenes look at this industry through a writer's keen eye, chronicling her descent into the skin trade and the effect it had on her self-image and her relationship with her now husband."
Wow. I've never read anything quite like this, so I think I'll send it out as a ring...

Caught this book on Saturday! Thank you! I just finished a book so I will start on this one next. Thanks for sharing your book! :-)
This book was really fascinating. Diablo Cody didn't make excuses for things she did. She also didn't seem feel bad about what she was doing. Most people think of strippers as low class women who use drugs and are probably prostitutes. I'm sure some of them are, but you can't really lump everyone into that category. I was fascinated that she was in a good relationship with a guy who was not at all jealous of the men she met at work, but actually curious about everything. She was also working an office job as well as stripping.
LadyKnightNiko, I really appreciate being able to read this book! Thank you! I am handing it off to Lumbermoose.

Received from JennyC1230. Thank you, LadyKnightNiko, for sharing.
Wow...an incredible look into the world of an "unlikely" stripper. It's amazing to hear her tell her story. I enjoyed this one more that Belle De Jour.
Thank you again for sharing. JennyC is mailing something to flossie771, so she'll add this book to the package.

Got it in the mail today. I just finished my other bookring book, so it is perfect timing. I will start this one right now. I loved Juno (the author wrote the screenplay) so I am glad to see that she wrote this book as well. :-)
Diablo Cody turned the world of stripping into a fascinating novel. I was amazed at all the detail and am curious how the research for the novel was done. :-) I think every woman that is broke during college thinks about "What if I COULD do it? (stripping)" I thought the description of the "Dollhouse" was pretty graphic. I was eating dinner while I was reading about a specific man that didn't like the janitors to clean up afterwards--ugh. I couldn't put the book down and finished it in a couple of hours.
