Saw the movie and had to read the book. As usual, the book is better.

When reality got "too dense" for 18-year-old Susanna Kaysen, she was hospitalized. It was 1967, and reality was too dense for many people. But few who are labeled mad and locked up for refusing to stick to an agreed-upon reality possess Kaysen's lucidity in sorting out a maelstrom of contrary perceptions. Her observations about hospital life are deftly rendered; often darkly funny. Her clarity about the complex province of brain and mind, of neuro-chemical activity and something more, make this book of brief essays an exquisite challenge to conventional thinking about what is normal and what is deviant.

Mailed to BCer yesterday.
Thanks, Linnefaulk! I'm eager to get started on it. And then it goes to Bassoony.
I sat down with this book and had it finished within an hour. I couldn't stop reading it. The author's language is brutally honest, yet sophisticated; its chapters are short and to the point, like mini-essays, each with their own point to make. The brevity helped to punctuate the realities of Kaysen's life both in and out of the hospital. If you're expecting a book that reads like the film, you won't like it. I liked it very much. Now it's going to bassoony.
This came in the mail nearly 2 weeks ago and it's been sitting on the table waiting to be "caught".
I saw the movie and loved it and the book looks that much better. I think I'm going to read this next...

I really enjoyed this movie but the book was that much better. Though I think the movie is a great adaptation, you don't get the to know Susanna's "inner thoughts" which are really the essence of the book.
A quick, insigtful read.
