A deeply touching story about art historian Leo Herzberg, his close artist friend Bill Wechsler and their wives Erica and Lucille. It plays in the hothouse of the New York art world and is narrated by Leo over a span of twenty-five years.

Focussing on four people, it appears like an intimate theatre. It's all honest seriousness and more tragedy than irony. A sharply observed psychological study of a man who becomes the martyr of perception. Leo is unable to act; he just watches with aching heart how the disaster unfolds.
The book is sometimes almost unbearable to read. Hustvedt admitted in an interview that some passages have been almost unbearable to write. The story bases on personal experience; I've heard similar tales about Auster's addicted son David.
