Introduction by Edward A. Weeks.

I'd never read any Joseph Conrad before, and I had no idea that he was from Poland.

After reading the intro, I read Youth before Heart of Darkness since that was the order of the stories in Marlow's life.

I know Heart of Darkness is a classic, but I much preferred the adventure stories of Youth and Typhoon. Maybe Heart of Darkness was just too grim for my present mood, but I just couldn't get into the story or care about the characters.

A couple of favorite bits from Typhoon: "It was something formidable and swift, like the sudden smashing of a vial of wrath." and "The long, long stress of a gale does it; the suspense of the interminably culminating catastrophe..."

This will be passed on to a co-worker from Poland (who knew he was Polish and has already read Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim).
