I thought this was a wonderful retelling of the Snow White fairy tale. Gregory Maguire skillfully wove the fabled politics of the Borgia family in the early 16th century with the storybook events of Snow White, making everything deeper, fuller, richer, and meaningful.

I especially loved that it was set in Tuscany since I was there myself in 2006 and visited many of the same cities that Maguire's characters did. I saw The Legend of the True Cross--a sequence of frescoes painted by Piero della Francesca in the Basilica of San Francesco in Arezzo--with my own eyes, just as Vicente de Nevada does.

For me, this was a much easier read than Maguire's "Wicked." As much as I enjoyed that book, I enjoyed this one more.
