Purchased new on one of the BC Ferries bound for Tsawwassen, and read it its entirety during my wee vacation to Castlegar and Nelson, BC. Finished on Saturday, April 26, 2008.

I LOVED this book! (In fact, I loved it so much that I sought out and purchased another of Miriam Toews's books on the ferry ride back home at the end of the weekend!) While I'm not Mennonite, I did grow up in the Christian church, so many of the observations about the Christian subculture resonated and made me alternately laugh and grimace.

From the back cover:

A Complicated Kindness is a fiercely original story about the ties that bind families together and the forces that tear them apart. This is the world according to Nomi Nickel, a bewildered and wry young woman trapped in a small Mennonite town that seeks to set her on the path to righteousness and smother her at the same time. As Nomi searches for the truth behind the recent disappearance of her mother and sister, she finds herself on a direct collision course with the only community she has ever known. In A Complicated Kindness, a book that has found its way into the hearts of thousands of Canadians, Miriam Toews reveals herslef as a master storyteller at the height of her powers.
I'm definitely bringing this to our next BookCrossing meet - I want everyone to read it!
