A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

I rescued this from the library give-away box because it was one of those I'd always heard about but never read. It was billed as a growing up with adversity story, but I really am enjoying it more as a period piece of early 1900s New York. The attitudes of these poor and hard-working really seem passe...and I don't mean that for the better. It makes our contemporary culture seem fatted and decadent.

I received this book today as a surprise from juliebarreto. I read this book ages ago and don't remember much of the story. Coincidentally, I was looking at a new edition of this book in B&N a few weeks ago and thought that I would like to read it again. And now here it is! How wonderful! Thank you, juliebarreto!
I really enjoyed reading this book again. The only part of the story that I remembered clearly from the first time I read it was when Francie received the doll at the Christmas party. That scene was a poignant one for a child - as an adult, I got even more out of the book this time around. This is a book I would like to own and re-read again someday.
Wow, I guess I forgot to journal that I had received this. It's going to sit in my permanent collection for awhile because its a definite reread.
