Gee, I'm just not a fan of science fiction and fantasy. I read half-way through this book and thought it was great, but when the author introduced the supernatural elements, I completely lost interest. Clearly, he is a talented writer, but magic and spells and unearthly creatures simply don't appeal to me. This book really should go to someone who would enjoy the entire thing.

I really enjoyed this book a lot. Although I don't usually read the Horror genre, But Orson Scott Card has always intruged me. I really liked the message that was given: family values and morals are so very important when raising your children! But it wasn't just about that, it sure wasn't lacking in mystery and suspence either. Although, it wasn't like a Stephen King scare the pants off you so you can never sleep without the lights on book, and that's what appealed to me! I read this book in one day and wasn't afraid to turn my lights off and go to sleep!

Orson Scott Card is one of my favorite authors, and this was one of the few books of his that I hadn't read. Card is a terrific story teller, and while this might not be his best book, it is still a wonderful read.

I'm trying to decide what I would call Treasure Box. Its not fantasy, and I really don't think it fits well in the Horror genre either. It is a supernatural suspense story, but I didn't find it so much scary as just plain creepy. Card focuses this story on power...those who use and abuse it, as well as those who crave it. He also raises some interesting questions about wealth as power. But there is also a subtext here about love and the quest for the fulfillment that love provides us.

As usual, Card has managed to entertain me with a thrilling story, and at the same time give me things to think about.

[Added:] Ooops...I forgot to mention how wonderful it was to read a story set, in part, in places that I'm familiar with. I lived in Sterling, VA for about 5 years (during the years the story is set, to be precise) and am extremely familiar with the Northern Virgnia locations he describes in this book. In fact, the apartment I lived in my first two years in Sterling is right next to the townhouse complex that the Duncans live in! It's amazing to read a book that so accurately describes locations so familiar to me.

This was an excellent, exciting, can't put it down, supernatural suspense thriller. Orson Scott Card can truly write in any genre. I have enjoyed his science fiction, fantasy, and Biblical historical novels. Although I don't ususally read horror or books dealing with the supernatural, this book was just as good as the rest of his work. Despite a simple seeming plot, there were deep themes and ideas thrown around. I really emphathized with the main character's struggles, and didn't want the book to end. I'll see if anyone is interested in this book as a ray.

I like OSC which is why I joined this ray. Liked the book, hapen to be fond of "everything's going normally when suddenly something weird happens" (being a weirdness magnet myself).

Sucked it back real fast, as you can tell by my catch and release dates. I hope other people have as much fun with it as I did!

Nope. I couldn't get into this book. I haven't read a lot of sci fi lately. Perhaps that is why. I have a huge pile of rings, so I will pass this on. Thank you for sharing!

I notice the genre is listed as Literature & Fiction, which is rather a catch-all for a book such as this one that really doesn't fit in Horror or Sci/Fi fantasy or the supernatural but in a little of all 3.

I like Quentin, although he was a bit sheltered, and I really disliked Madeline, even when I first met her under the cherry tree.

The plot was good but the other characters were somewhat 2 dimensional. I thought more could have been explored between the 3 generation of women and less on reading "how-to" sex books.

Overall an enjoyable read. Thanks for sharing! It'll be traveling to SandDanz soon.
