I couldn't put Papillon down. I know that it made a deep impression on me when I first read it as a teenager. So I'm intrigued to know if the sequel is as good. I know there was a lot of publicity about the film of Papillon because it was thought very risque. It was rated 18, & I was too young to go & see it, although some of my friends looked older, & managed to go. I was very envious.

This is the blurb:
"Banco continues the adventures of Henri Charriere - nicknamed Papillon - in Venezuela, where he has finally won his freedom after 13 years of escape and imprisonment. Despite his resolve to become an honest man, Charriere is soon involved in hair-raising exploits with goldminers, gamblers, bank-robbers, revolutionaries - robbing and being robbed, his lust for life as strong as ever. He also runs night clubs in Caracas until an earthquake ruins him in 1967- when he decides to write the book that brings him international fame.

Banco is ferocious, funny tender, crowded with incident and excitement. Banco is vibrantly alive as Papillon. banco is the work of a born story-teller."

Read in January 2019.
Many years ago, I was fascinated to read Papillon. the exaggerated autobiography of the French petty criminal Henri Charrière, who had been incarcerated in a top security penal colony, kept himself fit and sane in solitary confinement, then escaped into the jungle. Who knows how much of it was true. This is more of the same. A life full of high-spirited adventure, illegal escapades and get rich quick schemes, run-ins with the authorities and so on. He ended up falling in love and running restaurants and clubs in a growing oil town in a remote part of Venezuela. What made this book extra special was the photo of a gnarly Charrière in later life, storyteller extraordinaire.
