Ruth Rendell writing as Barbara Vine
Synopsis
Moving backwards and forwards between the 1950s and the 1990s, and between Suffolk, London and the north Devon coast, a novel about a noted writer who, it is discovered when he dies, created an entirely new identity for himself when he was in his twenties.
Gripping, almost impossible to put down Guardian
One of the most frightening novels I have ever read ... Gerald Candless, the monster at the heart of the maze, is a marvellous creation

Finished reading this in October but only journalling now as I had written the BCID wrong (grrr) ... I reserved this as a RABCK for L1nda way back in May 2008 when hubby and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary and am PMing her to see if it's still on her wish list. I knew it would take sometime to get to it ... and it did.
It was worth the wait though. This is an excellent - though very dark - read. The ending was almost unexpected. Barbara Vine aka Ruth Rendell is an excellent writer. More information about her here

This was promised as a RABCK to L1nda in NSW Australia about 1½ years ago as part of my 20 years 20 RABCKs wedding anniversary celebrations on May 21st 2008. I can't believe how long it took me to get round to reading this ... and then when I did I'd transposed the numbers in the BCID grrrr
anyway I got a PM from L1nda today - she still hasn't read this and would still like it as a RABCK and so "all's well that ends well" as the Bard might say ... and this book FINALLY wings its way down under TODAY.
