I'm a fan of Kate Chopin, and I find her exploration of gender roles at the turn of the 20th century to be illuminating. Her writing was banned because of her depiction of human sexuality, which is not erotic but perhaps proposes the idea that human beings are by nature sensual beings with artificially constructed rules that inhibit healthy sexuality. I'm sure that by the standards of 19th century America, Chopin was licentious.
