From the back cover:

'Roy peels away the layers of her mysteries with such delicate cunning, such a dazzlingly adroit shuffle of accumulating revelations that to discuss the plot would be to violate it...Like a devotionally built temple, The God Of Small Things builds a massive interlocking structure of fine, intensely felt details. A novel of real ambitions must invent its own language, and this one does.' - John Updike, 'New Yorker'.

I picked this up in a charity shop a couple of weeks ago, but my TBR mountain is too daunting to press on with anything that doesn't seem to be quite my cup of tea, so I'm passing it along to my lovely BC friend Stephanie in Canada, who made a wish!

Happy reading, sweetie. :O)

Lucycat, you have really made my day! It was such a wonderful surprise to find this in the mailbox this evening. Although I knew the book was on its way, I did not expect the beautiful beaded bookmark and cute note inside. I've been laid low the past few days with a bad cold, plus things are bananas at work, so this was a very much needed, and effective pick-me-up. I've heard many good things about this book so I'm really looking forward to reading it.

I've been reading this on and off for about a week. I'm about a quarter of the way through, and still waiting for the good part to start. So many people have raved about this that I think I will stick with it, but I really hope it gets better. I had such high hopes for this one.

Thank again lucycat for thinking of me and sending it.

This kept putting me to sleep, so I've set it aside for a bit.

Finally finished this very strange book on the weekend. The last third was pretty good, but the first two-thirds I found to be incredibly tedious and dull. In retrospect I kind of understand what she was striving for, but at the time I was reading the beginning of the book, it was pretty tough slogging. She goes into incredible detail, and the flow is non-linear, so it really meanders for a while and leaves the reader wondering what the point of it all is. It's not until the very end that the light bulb starts to go on. There were several instances where I enjoyed Roy's playful use of the language. Ultimately, I'm not sure it's worth it in the end. This book has garnered a lot of praise, so it's difficult not to be disappointed by it. I don't know what I expected, but it didn't measure up.

I will probably release this at tomorrow's Toronto meetup.
