Book Description
Six people – five women and a man – meet once a month in California’s Central Valley to discuss Jane Austen’s novels. They are ordinary people, neither happy nor unhappy, but each of them is wounded in different ways, they are all mixed up about their lives and relationships. Over the six months they meet, marriages are tested, affairs begin, unsuitable arrangements become suitable – under the guiding eye of Jane Austen a couple of them even fall in love….

if I could eat this novel, I would Alice Sebold, author of The Lovely Bones

Picked up a lot of secondhand paperbacks in English (chic lit) today, for only 0.50€ each. This was one of them! This looks a lovely read.

reserved for turnpages as a swap!

edited on April 5th 2008 to say:
good thing I'd written this ... as I chose this book to take to Tallinn with me, and then release (give to our translator) but then realised that I'd already promised this to turnpages. So off to choose another book to take with me.

Besides men don't do book clubs ... they see reading as a solitary pleasure (p 3) wondering if this is why only women (usually) attend our BC gatherings here in Turku!

So sorry that this has taken forever to get to you Turnpages. I can't even remember our swap ... but anyway it's now yours and hope you find it enjoyable.

P.S. I love reading where books end up -and what other readers thought of the book (good and bad!) - so do please take time to make a journal entry if you possibly can. Appreciate that!

It's taken quite some time and for that I'm sorry, but I started reading this book yesterday and I'm loving it already. So it won't be long before I'll have finished it completely...
The book does remind me rather a lot of Elizabeth Noble's "The Reading Group" - not sure if I like that or if that irritates me. I'll tell you once I've finished with the book...

Indeed, the book reminded me of Noble's "The Reading Group". The members of the reading groups meet at the different houses each month to discuss one novel by Austen and eventually they get to know each other and the reader gets to know each member. I liked Jocelyn, Bernadette, Prudie, Grigg, Allegra and Sylvia as characters but found some of their stories too far-fetched. A nice and light-hearted read, though.
