Synopsis
What if being Royal was a crime? The UK has come over all republican. The Royal Family exiled to an Exclusion Zone with the other villains and spongers. And to cap it all, the Queen has threatened to abdicate. Yet Prince Charles is more interested in root vegetables than reigning ...unless his wife Camilla can be Queen in a newly restored monarchy. But when a scoundrel who claims to be the couple's secret lovechild offers to take the crown off their hands, the stage is set for a right Royal show down. And the question for Camilla (and rest of the country) will be: Queen of the vegetable patch or Queen of England?

My Mum had this given to her a while back and she gave it to me, but I couldn't get on with it so I'm offering it as a RABCK

Lellie thank you for this RABCK - I just got the Queen and I (also by Townsend) from a friend and so I'll read that first and then this. Both look a lot of tongue-in-cheek fun. Thanks

edited to add: Lellie put a lovely steel pagekeeper in this book. What a lovely surprise. Double thanks :)

AIMING to read this within the next couple of weeks and release it as part of the international women's day (Naistenpäivä-haaste 2009) here in Finland.

This book weighs a ton - so it will be released by hand to someone who requests it locally OR then wild-released.

Journal Entry 4 by seethroughfaith from Turku, Varsinais-Suomi / Egentliga Finland Finland on Tuesday, January 20, 2009
This is a really funny read -it's quite long (443pages) but you can zip through it very fast. I think both monarchist and anti-royallists would get a kick out of this!

I read Sue Townsend's The Queen & I a while back http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/5879839, and this volume is more or less a continuation or sequel of it.

I wrote about the queen and I

What I do think is clever is that Townsend does make a political statement - life IS hard for the poor/elderly/unemployed in Britain, social services /inner-city education /health care are a shambles ...the rich (and included in that are royalty) are insulated from it all.

A somewhat different message comes through in this book - and that is of people's gullability. That made me wince a bit!

A couple of quotes ...

First one for bookcrossers (p19-20)
Dwayne thought, yesterday I was one of 'the scum', the only difference between then and now is that I've took this job and had my tage took off official. I can go where I want now.He couldn't wait to visit the lending library in the town. He had heard that there were thousands of books on the shelves.

Seems to me that they could have done with some bookcrossing in the exclusion zones don't you think?!!!!

and the second (p. 386) simply because it made me laugh

Violet said 'Don't worry Liz, they'll never get our dogs off us. They're not that bleeding stupid. But the Queen did worry. She had known many politicians, and they were that stupid.

Journal Entry 7 by MeiMeiK from Turku, Varsinais-Suomi / Egentliga Finland Finland on Tuesday, January 20, 2009
What a quick home delivery -service seethroughfaith has! :D Thank you stf!

I'm reading "The Queen and I" at the moment so it inspired me to book this book for me. So... waiting to be read.

Journal Entry 8 by MeiMeiK from Turku, Varsinais-Suomi / Egentliga Finland Finland on Thursday, June 4, 2009
Woah, I started reading this almost right away when I got this book from seethroughfaith and it was in January. It's been a while since I've read a book this long! And because reading took so long I think I forgot sometimes what has happened earlier and who were the different characters in the book.

But hence my bad reading habits, I liked the book. Funny characters and dogs, someties quite harsh humour also. Thank you stf!

The book is reserved to fellow bookcrosser. :)

Received this from MeiMeiK, thank you! :-) I have read and liked quite many books by Sue Townsend, so let's see what this is like.

Journal Entry 10 by -solaria- from Turku, Varsinais-Suomi / Egentliga Finland Finland on Tuesday, November 24, 2009
Oh dear, I have completely forgotten to write something about this novel. I read it ages (well, months) ago, and I have already forgotten my first impressions. But here are some recollections...

This was a sort-of-sequel to the novel "The Queen and I", but all kinds of stuff have happened because the former was written in 1992 and this is pretty new, published 2006. Townsend continues with her satirical alternative Britain, where the members of the royal family are ordinary citicens, locked up in an Exclusion Zone. The prime minister Jack Barker is trying to lead the country, but everything is in disorder. The final nail in the coffin is the new "one-dog-per-household" law, which sends animal loving Brits to the barricades.

I didn't find this particularly long (compared with some + 1000 page novels I have read). I liked the book, but it was not as good as some of Townsend's other novels I have read. Nevertheless it was funny and entertaining enough, very easy to read. And besides, I have an affection for stories that take place in alternative realities.

I just _had_ to take this one along, though my aim was _not_ to bring back home anything... And hey, how could a member of a republic resist royalty?!

Journal Entry 13 by wingpippiswing at Turku, Varsinais-Suomi / Egentliga Finland Finland on Sunday, May 1, 2011
As I'm no fan of Camilla, I found the book somewhat funny, but also irritating as I'd not like to see her as a queen... Totally absurd story that gives you giggles! A tad too long, but skim reading parts didn't seem to harm the reading experience.

Thanks Pippis for this surprise wishlist book! And I noticed it's originally from Lellie, who was my Christmas exchange pal last year, greetings Lellie and wow what bricks you send all over the world.
I now realize this is a sequal to The Queen and I which I got a while ago, so perhaps I'll start with that one. I've always loved Adrian Moles, hopefully these are equally good.

Journal Entry 16 by wingkirjakkowing at Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Friday, October 18, 2019
I finally began reading this after all these years and soon found out this was not as good as Adrian Moles. I am passing this on in near future, hopefully already tomorrow, if there is room in the library exchange shelf (it was pretty crowded earlier this week).
