This is the story of deep family secrets based on the strict moral code of the time it is set in, early 1900s. Carl is off at war and he returns wounded to find his wife has died and his wife's sister has taken over the farm and his daughter's care. The daughter, Ruth, has memories of witnessing her mother's death, more like impressions, that she can't fully recognize because she was only three at the time.

I couldn't get into this book at all although not quite sure why.
Rather than struggle on I decided it was better to move it along.

A check on comments on other copies of the book (through the BookCrossing site) show me that people either really enjoyed it, or had a reaction similar to mine. Be interesting to see what readers of this copy think.
