Bird lived in Iran as a child (her father was a diplomat) and felt impelled to travel there alone as a adult. For the most part she had pleasing and safe adventures, with only a few run ins the sharia. The most interesting parts were the contrasts between Western and Eastern perceptions of political events -- a group of Iranian women is shocked to discover the Atollayah Khomaniy is not as admired in American as he is in Iran.
