A classic gun-thriller from the modern master of the genre. Hunter's tale of Earl Swagger's revenge on a racist Mississippi prison camp which hides a gruesome secret is what a friend of mine calls "satisfying gun-porn". Slow in parts and assuming some knowledge of guns and shooting on the part of the reader, it's not for everyone, but I got hooked on Earl's struggle against the deliberate dehumanization of prisoners under the rule of cruel men and cheered his revenge to the last, explosive moment.
Gruesome, violent, melodramatic, but surprisingly thought-provoking on matters of racism, family, loyalty and the inhumanity of man.
I'm not Hunter's biggest fan, and the testosterone levels in this book (or any Hunter novel) can get a bit overwhelming for us frail flowers o' femininity, but, with the exception of some poor use of dialect and patois and the tendency to drag in parts, I generally enjoyed the book.
