The place is St Oswald's, an old and long-established boys' grammar school in the north of England. A new year has just begun, and for the staff and boys of the school, a wind of unwelcome change is blowing. Suits, paperwork and Information Technology rule the world and Roy Straitley, Latin master, eccentric, and veteran of St Oswald's, is finally - reluctantly - contemplating retirement. But beneath the little rivalries, petty disputes and everyday crises of the school, a darker undercurrent stirs. And a bitter grudge, hidden and carefully nurtured for thirteen years, is about to erupt. Who is Mole, the mysterious insider, whose cruel practical jokes are gradually escalating towards violence - and perhaps, murder? And how can an old and half-forgotten scandal become the stone that brings down a giant?

Oh, I liked this book! I enjoyed how the narrative wove back and forth between the two main characters, into the present then back to the past. What surprised me the most though, was the ending! I thought I'd figured out who the main protagonist was, but boy was I mistaken. All in all an enjoyable read. Thanks for sharing Molyneux!

This novel is a treasure from England. Plot lines aside, this book is a fine exploration of the teacher's world. What makes them good? What motivates them? And is life ever fair? At the center is a very experienced Straitley, who has taught Latin at a reputed school. But things keep happening at the school one semester. In examining the goings on, much is learnt about how the system works at institions such as this.
got the book at a Bookcrossing Meetup. So great! Lots of lively book talk. Have given to a friend in Roslindale, Massachusetts. She will probably release it again soon: she reads a lot, and quickly! Not like me.
