In Dubious Battle (20th Century Classics)
1 journaler for this copy...
My personal collection. Registered only to track my Steinbeck Quest 2008. A bit about my quest...The first of Steinbeck's works I read was The Grapes of Wrath. I think I was about 14 and NOT a big reader. It was such a powerful read that it has stuck with me all my life as "My Favorite Book"! I've read several other Steinbeck novels and have highly enjoyed most of them. (I do plan to re-read TGOW to see if it holds up.) In an ongoing effort to read more I've set a challenge for myself. I'd like to read at least ONE Steinbeck novel per month throughout the year 2008. It may be a new read or a re-read. I will not be releasing any of these copies as they are my personal collection. I'm simply using my own bookshelf as a tracking device and will look upon the journals lovingly as I progress. I do release copies of Steinbeck's work often and will continue to do so, but they will not be these copies. This is a self-indulgent quest and I look forward to making it a cool experience. These books will tie nicely into my 2008 Challenge to read 52 books in 52 weeks. (Up from the 31 I read in 2007!) Here I go...
Read in May 2008
I finished this one a while back and forgot to journal my thoughts. What to say...well, Steinbeck is a master of the simple truth. In so few words this man can convey the utmost, profound meaning. He does it so well with this one as he enlightened me on the struggles of the California apple pickers during the late 1920's early 1930's. They fought the battles against "The Man" in an effort to improve living conditions for the average Joe and his family. Great characters, great storyline, down to earth. I truly enjoyed this read and put it right up there with The Grapes of Wrath.
