A book that I had read before but felt that I understood better this time. Part of the way through it a line from an old tune kept running through my mind, "War! da da da - da da da, What is it good for? Absolutely nothing!" This same sentiment is much more elegantly stated in a quote on page 299 of this book, "I hate that drum's discordant sound, Parading round, and round, and round; To me it talks of ravaged plains, And buring towns, and ruined swains." John Scott, 'Ode' (1782) In this book you will find political intrigue, spies and betrayal, the French Revolution and the city of London in 1795. Also some interesting astronomy, a murder mystery and some abominable behavior. Read the postscript as well, it is fascinating.
