NB This copy is in Finnish

According to her own complex moral calculations, Katie Carr has earned her affair. She's a doctor, after all, and doctors are decent people, and on top of that, her husband David is the self-styled Angriest Man in Holloway. But when David suddenly becomes good - properly, maddeningly, give-away-all-his-money good - Katie's sums no longer add up, and she is forced to ask herself some very hard questions. Nick Hornby's brilliant new novel, a No. 1 bestseller in the UK and Ireland, offers a painfully funny account of modern marriage and parenthood, and asks that most difficult of questions: what does it mean to be good?

Hardback copy - bought for €2 (great new looking hardback, with dustcover) to release - but how I wish this was in English, it looks such a good read!

In my what's to be released next competition (#100 wild release) -many chose this - though it wasn't the right answer. Seems there's some interest however ... So I'm offering it as a RAY. I'll take it down to the BC meeting in Turku today (Sirius cafe in the library) and see if anyone wants to give the ray a kick start!

It's a ray - so no need to get the book back to me in the end. But hoping for lots of interesting entries (in Finnish ofcourse!)

Seethroughfaith and me made a good and funny exchange yesterday: We both brought a same book in a BC-meeting, she in Finnish and me in English. I have read Hornby's About a Boy and liked it, so I hope this one is as good. And I'll propably read the one in Finnish a bit faster.

Ainakin saan suomenkielisen luettua hieman nopeammin.

I'm glad I got "How to be good" in Finnish too. Hornby's style to write is of it's own kind and I just couldn't adapt to it well enough to read this book in English. After I had got past the first few chapters where Katie is mostly trying to throw a dice about a divorce between a husband and a lover, the book and the story actually started for me. Because despite whatever the Finnish back cover says, this book is not about divorce or marriage at all, I think. The book is about being good to the other people and how people react when somebody just starts acting unselfishly. In the two main characters there are opposed two ways of being good: the institutionalized, professional way that doesn't necessarily give any love and the voluntary, spontaneous human kindness towards everyone. And then there is DJ GoodNews, the jesus character, who takes the whole "being good" thing to the metaphysical level.

The book was thought provoking, sharp and witty. I liked it.

Pidin.

Thanks sft and JonAsp -especially for the oh, so small, but very delightful and extremely practical bookmark, which come along with book :).

The book arrvied just in time for the weekend and I don't quite know how it happened, but I read it rather quickly. Interesting book.

Katie seemed to be the pragmatic one in the marriage. I couldn't quite believe, how selfish the 'do gooder' in this book was. David simply totally ignored the needs of his children. That to me is unforgivable whether it happens in fiction or real life. I'm also a firm believer in 'put you money where your mouth is'. I neither could belive that he decided to stop working and use his wife's salary for his own purposes, however well inteded they were. And he did it just like that without consulting his wife. The end doesn't justify the meas, me thinks.

What was interesting in this book was the two totally different interpertations of what a good person is like. I think that is a question, that we all think about from time to time. If we don't, we at least ought to. I liked the tone of the book very much. Eventhough one of the most irritating things in life for me is selfish people, I didn't get worked up about the characters. I found the book to be very pleasent reading.

Sft, thanks for sharing!

The book came to Vuosaari tonight. We'll give it a try, hoping too to find it someday in English ...

Finished the English version of this book on the way to work.
Was a very special read, the start was a bit hard to get through, but towards the middle you get the idea what the book is about and at the end most of the loose parts fit together and make very well sense.
Thank you for letting me read it in English, was worth the trouble and gives some subjects to think about during this period of Advent and waiting for Christmas to come!

As soon as Hyvät ihmiset hit the table today at the BC meetup, I grabbed the book. I've read and enjoyed other books by Nick Hornby, so hopefully this is as good. Thanks Hippolein for bringing the book.
