The Source

The Source is Michener's look at the birth and full flowering of Judaism, from early human religions to the founding of present-day Israel. The book is told through the eyes of a disparate group of archaeologists and the artifacts they discover. I was assigned part of this book as reading for an Old and New Testament class in college, and I ended up stealing moments throughout the semester to read the whole thing.
