Got this book from a generous person on BookMooch so I could share it with others. :)

From the cover: "'Not long after I moved with my family to a small town in New Hampshire, I happened upon a path that vanished into a wood on the edge of town.'
So beings Bill Bryson's hilarious book A Walk in the Woods. Following his return to America after twenty years in Britain, Bryson decided to reacquaint himself with his native country by walking the 2,100 mile Appalachian Trail, which stretches from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine. The AT, as it's affectionately known to thousands of hikers, offers and astonishing landscape of silent forests and sparkling lakes - and to a writer with the comic genius of Bill Bryson, it also provides endless opportunities to test his own powers of ineptitude and to witness the majestic silliness of his fellow human beings.
for a start there's the gloriously out-of-shape Stephen Katz, a buddy from Iowa who accompanies the similarly unfit Bryson on the trail. Katz's modus operandi is a simple one: jettison everything from his backpack and head for the nearest town, where there are cozy restaurants filled with waitresses called Rayette. But eventually Bryson and Katz settle into their stride, and it's not long before they come across the fabulously annoying Mary Ellen, whose disappearance ruins a perfectly good slice of pie; a gang of Ralph Lauren-attired yuppies from whom Katz appropriates a key piece of equipment; and a security guard in Pennsylvania who, for no ascertainable reason, impounds Bryson's car. Mile by arduous mile these latter-day pioneers walk America, along the way surviving the threat of bear attacks, the loss of key provisions, and everything else this awe-inspring countrty can throw at them.
But A Walk in the Woods is more than just a laugh-out-loud hike. Bryson's acute eye is a wise witness to this fragile and beautiful trail, and as he tells its fascinating history, he makes a moving plea for the conservation of America's last great wilderness. An adventure, a comedy, a lament, and a celebration, A Walk in the Woods is destined to become a modern classic of travel literature."

Bill Bryson is one of my favourite authors (and I found him through BC). His books really make me laught out loud. This one was no exception, though not as captivating as other books I read from this author. It was a bit too long and too full of descriptions. It took me some time to read it (though not as much as Bryson needed to hike the Appalachian Trail), so I have to apologize to VividReader and to everyone after me in this bookring.

Here's a link about the trail, to learn more:

I've asked for katrinat's address.

My brother has been trying to get me to read Bill Bryson for ages but I always thought that he enjoyed hem because they where written about places he had been to (he's travelled the world twice - I've been to 3 countries outside England!). I tried Byrson's book on Shakespeare, thought it was ok but I didn't learn much as I studied Shakespeare so often I've pretty much got the gist of the little bit of information there is to no about him.

So, when I saw that this was a bookring on Bookcrossing and I could read it just for the price of postage I signed up for it. And I'm so glad I did! I hadn't even heard of the Appalachian Trail that Bryson and his friend hike up across several states of America, I have no interest in hiking (well I hadn't when I started) and I'm not much of a non-fiction fan so it was a great surprise to enjoy this.

Bryson charts his trail, the problems, boredom, his annoyance at fellow hikers alongside an entertaining account of the history and nature of the trail. He writes so well that I felt that I could see the woods surrounding him, feel his frustration at Kratz his fellow hiker and at theAmerican government for not keeping the trail as well preserved as it should be. He comes across as a really interesting guy with a lot to say but with the ability to keep it short and focused.

I will certainly be digging out the copy of The Short History of Nearly Everything that has been lurking on my bookshelves since it got brought.

I have the address of the next person and will be sending it out this afternoon

I'm not going to get a chance to read this book. So I'm passing it on now, rather than holding on to it for another couple of weeks.

Thanks for including me in your ring. It will be on its way to Tourchgirl on Monday.

Arrived safely today, thanks mirp. Trying not to abandon all other life to start reading...because I know I will.

I did sit down and read this book within 2 days! The delay has been Torchman insisting on reading it as well. So... I really enjoyed it. I loved the relationship between Katz and Bryson. I came away with the feeling there was much more that went on than was written. Having a brother with similar "issues" as Katz I'm sure that must be true and I think Bryson handled it really well.
I have a thing for American history for reasons I have never been able to define, it just interests me, so I knew I would enjoy this book. One of my favourite reads as a child was "Christy" the misty eyed tale of a missionary girl in the Appalachian mountains.
I wonder if this is why I loved the history of the Appalachian Trail and the description of the countryside. Torchman didn't like those parts at all, felt it was "too much" -hey, two reviews in one!
Also enjoyed Bryson's usual hilarious observations of his fellow Humans (also a hobby of mine). Favourite parts being the "Designer Hikers" who crowd them out of a hut, also being holed up in the snow at the mercy of mercenary camping ground proprietors.
All in all this has been one of my favourite Brysons. Thanks VividReader for the Bookring! Posted to Nikkilovesbooks today.

Thanks Torchgirl, the book arrived today. I have been so interested in reading it. I just loved History of Nearly Everything, and recently read Down Under - which just had me cracking up all of the way through it. It was so funny. I have high expectations of this one. I hope Bill lives up to them. I'll message rmjwold so I can pass it on as soon as I have finished. Thanks VividReader, for sharing.

Sorry about the triple entry last time (I'll try not to do that again - not sure what happened). I LOVED the book. I laughed all throughout the story. It was a quick read because I had trouble putting it down. Thanks so much for this opportunity. I'm posting it off to rmjwold today.

Bill Bryson had me laughing out loud, I really enjoyed the story of his travels. This is the first Bryson I have read and his observations of the everyday interactions with people that he meets on and off the trail were the best parts of the book.

I was reading in awe of the difficult situations he and Katz find themselves in, and the book even made me think about going on a hike (which is not me at all!).

Now on it's way to Texas to Geniedances.

The book arrived a few days ago. Unfortunately, due to Hurricane Ike, I had no electricity until today. I will read it ASAP and get it on its way again soon.

Bryson's stories of the Appalachian Trail are both funny and interesting. He and his buddy, Katz, not only learned a lot about nature and human nature during their long hike. The characters they met along the way made for some great laughs. Add some facts about the land they were exploring and you have a very entertaining read. As of today, this book is now on its way to the next reader on the list.

Joy! I received "A Walk in the Woods" in the mail today. Thanks, Geniedances, for the Houston postcard. :-) There was also a Bookcrossing bookmark enclosed (always welcome) and printed instructions about the bookring, which I hadn't seen before. Very helpful. I'll look forward to reading this asap and sending it to the next in line. (I'm glad your back on the grid, Geniedances.)

Love this book. During quiet time when my husband and I are reading our books, I annoyed the heck out of him with this one because it was laugh-out-loud funny. Bryson is so facile and funny with words, and the banter with his thru-hiker companion, Katz, so fresh and witty (did they really say all that?!), it's one of the most joyful reads of the genre that I've had in quite a while.

The book was media-mailed to SpoiledRotten today. I was already halfway finished when I got caught up in the election -- and houseguests after that -- or it would have been mailed much sooner!

Received this in the mail today. Thanks so much for sending & including me, I have one (very long) book in front of this but will read as fast as I can. Will journal again when through.

12/20/08 Update, I want to apologize for keeping this book longer than one month. I will start this as soon as I am done with my current read (no later than next week) and pass it on within the month. So sorry for the delay and thanks to all of you for your patience and understanding>

I really enjoyed this book. It made me want to walk, at least part of the AT. Who knows, maybe someday I will. I will try & get the book in the mail tomorrow. Will journal when it has been sent. Thanks again for including me.
