Who could resist a title like this one?

Extremely well researched and written book about a book-a Haggadah-and an illuminated manuscript as well. Hanna, the book conservator called in to repair some of the damage previously done, is a very independent woman of the 21st century. The complex relationship she has with her mother, while at first not believable, was fully explained as the book progressed and eventually became an important clue to her own character.

I loved the construction of this book in going backward from the present through the hands of each of the "owners" of the Haggadah and how each impacted the book. It was a wonderful way to give a brief look at history, and I don't think I'll ever look the same at a book with a stain or crumbs in it.

A captivating story of an ancient manuscript, and its travels across centuries and places. The author takes us back in time, tracing the book's history from modern day Sarajevo, and back through World War II in Bosnia, 1800s Vienna, 1600s Venice, and 1400s Spain. Each stop along the way illuminates more about the book's features and condition, as well as the people with whom it comes into contact. At first, Hannah, the modern conservator and heroine, is somewhat brusque and off-putting, but over time one begins to understand the reasons behind her actions. Interesting parallels tie her together with the other flawed people who help and hinder the book's odyssey.

Thank you for the chance to read this book. I will pass it along or wild release it soon.
