It is set in Georgia, and it deals with a Japanese sailor who has jumped ship and washed up in an artists' colony on one of the coastal islands. The two main characters are Hiro Tanaka, the aforementioned sailor, and Ruth Dershowitz, a fierce but fledgling writer in residence at Thanatopsis House on Tupelo Island.

This book is thematically similar to Boyle's The Tortilla Curtain. It took a while to get going, but once it did I enjoyed it.
