This novel by Zadie Smith was an instant hit. It's about a family that leads its life in the vicinity of a university. Everyone has their little personal troubles. Eventyally they twist, tangle and culminate into real conflicts between two important families. I liked the weather-related details such as the sloshing rain and gale-force winds that Smith reports in sufficient detail. Not knowing the first thing about the book or its author in England a few years back, I only bought this book because the ornamental covers looked so beautiful!

I'm releasing this to the hands of another bookcrosser at a BC meeting tonight.

I finally finished this today. I started reading this just after I got it from LaPitcoune but I kept putting it aside, reading other books instead, all the time feeling guilty not reading On Beauty. Maybe I was slightly disappointed how it didn't crab my attension from the very beginning and it was easy to read something else and wait for the right moment to continue with Zadie Smith. Were my hopes so high because of all the hype around this book?

Now after reading, I ddon't know what to say, it left me some mixed feelings. It was a good read, I really liked the language and her writing style. I'm glad I get to read On Beauty in its original language, I always find e.g streetlanguage translated into finnish a bit awkward. BUT, the characters left me somewhat cold, they weren't likable at all. All the time referring to some great poet or painter or writer etc. was a bit tiresome, less is sometimes more.

I have White Teeth waiting on my shelf, which I took home with me at the same meeting with this one, and I'm looking forward to reading it. It would be nice to find out my opinions on that after reading this more hyped book.

Thanks again LaPitchoune for letting me read this book. It will be released in our 3rd Finnish National BookCrossing MeetUp in June 2008, which is held in Suomenlinna fortress in Helsinki, unless someone wants to read it before that.

What a surprise! Thank you both, Niksu and LaPitchoune! White Teeth is one of my favorite books, so I'm really looking forward to reading this book. I wish I had more time...

Ja pahoittelut (en tiedä kenelle), että kestää näin pitkään. Kirja on jostain syystä jäänyt muiden jalkoihin. Yritän pistää liikkeelle piakkoin. Siis nyt mennään jo syyskuussa, hui kauhistus.

Nyt ei jaksa edes yrittää kirjoittaa kuin suomeksi vaan... Olin kyllä vähän pettynyt tähän kirjaan, koska tosiaan se Valkoiset hampaat oli aikoinaan niin hyvä. Saattaa kyllä johtua siitäkin, että kirja joutui odottamaan pitkiä aikoja lukemista, kun tuli kaikkea muuta luettavaa siihen väliin. Ei nyt silti huonoksi voi sanoa, liikaa odotin!
