It was the Degas-like dancer on the front cover and society's expectation that every little girl must dream of becoming a prima ballerina that made me open the front cover of this book. I should not have given in.

The premise is that the narrator's grandmother has died; it's really quite sad because they were so close, even closer than the narrator and her mother were. How is it, then, that she knows absolutely nothing about her grandmother's life? The narrator is given a packet of letters and some old ballerina toe shoes that were on a shelf in her grandmother's closet in the nursing home she died in, and suddenly, this grown woman with children of her own decides that she would like to know more about who her grandmother really was. Perhaps it hits too close to home. My grandmother died when I was 12, going on 13, and unfortunately her memory left her several years before that. If I were lucky enough to have had her in my life until I was old enough to have children of my own, I would have made sure I knew who she was and how she came to be my wonderful grandmother.

To top it off, this story may contain all the melodrama and cliche of all of Danielle Steel's books combined. Beautiful, talented, yet modest and unassuming, self-sacrificing heroine. Handsome, kind, strong, self-sacrificing hero. Star-crossed lovers. Great tragedies handled with grace and dignity. I don't know if I've ever disliked two people more! To me, they came off as selfish. Their love was transforming, but I don't think it transformed them in any good way.

This book just confirmed to me why I stopped reading Danielle Steel 20 years ago. Perhaps the next reader will feel differently.

I usually do not read fiction, but due to the subject matter I did enjoy this book.
