"Twelve-year-old Amir is desperate to gain he approval of his father and resolves to win the local kite-fighting tournament, to prove that he has the makings of a man. His loyal friend Hassan promises to help him - for he always helps Amir - but this is 1970s Afghanistan and Hassan is merely a low-cast servant who is jeered at in the street, although Amir feels jealous of his natural courage and the place he holds in his father's heart. But neither of the boys could foresee what would happen to Hassan on the afternoon of the tournament, which was to shatter their lives. After the Russians invade and the family is forced to flee to America, Amir realises that one day he must return to find the one thing that his new world cannot grant him: redemption."

Ben erg benieuwd!

Journal Entry 6 by Eej from Den Haag, Zuid-Holland Netherlands on Friday, March 28, 2008
To be honest, I am a bit disappointed by this book. After all the fuzz about it I expected a brilliant story or something. Although I did like the story and most of the characters, it was all a bit too much of a coincidence for my taste. The book really lost a lot of its believability toward the second half.

Apart from that, there is one thing I really, really hate in any story, and that is when the author makes sure you know what's coming by writing nonsense like "little did he know that this was the last bit of solid food he would be eating for weeks to come" or "at that time, he did not expect to be needing that knowledge so soon" or some such waste of space. This adds nothing! Either you allready know what's coming, because you've read the book up to here and it's not the first book you have read, or you didn't see it coming yet, but now the author spoiled the surprise. I wish editors wouldn't be so lenient sometimes.

Anyway, well, let's just say maybe my expectations were a bit too high. It wasn't really bad, and it's allways nice to be able to form your own opinion about any popular book :-)

Thanks E-mile, for sharing it!

No-one is more surprised than me that this has been flagged as a favourite and given top marks! I had no real expectations of this novel and wouldn't have necessarily sought it out, but having fallen into my hands I had to give it a go.

I was instantly captured by the story, of a young man growing up in Afghanistan before the Russian invasion, of his friendship with the son of his father's servant and what happens as his country is ripped apart. Despite the huge political background, this remains a more intimate story - the big changes, the war and the arrival of the Taliban, only emphasise how much Amir needs to change to rid himself of the guilt he carries. It's heart-breaking and emotional, a story that had me racing home to return to it's pages, and the ending left just the right frisson of hope after chapters of despair.

Highly recommended!

Congratulations! You have found a traveling book.
