I really enjoyed this book! Thank you so much for sharing it with me! :)

It is the story of Robert Merivel, the main character, narrated by himself. It is never boring and you can see how he changes and how the events of his life help him mature but, he never loses the spark that makes him special and funny. He became very dear to me, since the first chapter, although he is far away from being charming.
On page 193, he is talking about what his friend Pearce thinks of him:
"He once likened my life 'to a poorly done sampler, Merivel. Showing a variety of stitches, yet making up a most incoherent picture'."
I thought that was hilarious and very true.
The only character I didn't like much was the King, specially in the last part of the book. I have never read about Charles II and maybe his personality was just like the author depicts it, but his attitudes didn't seem to make much sense to me.
BTW, here is a link to information on Charles II from Wikipedia: Charles II

A really great book. At first I didn't like it much because it's surprisingly crude in places, but once I got to know Merivel it didn't bother me so much. I loved how you could really see Merivel changing from a shallow hedonist into a more thoughtful, less selfish person by the end. A wonderful read!

I'm going to save this to release at the Cape Town Book Fair in June.

Really enjoyed this one. I find that I enjoy historical fiction much more than I used to. The only downside is that it makes me want to read more about the periods in question - so many books, so little time!
