I'm officially a fan of the book now, too. I wasn't so sure about Stephen King as a writer after reading The Shawshank Redemption (which was a brilliant movie, but just a so-so short story), but I did enjoy The Dead Zone. It wasn't scary, or even what I'd call suspenseful, though; I probably ruined it by being too familiar with the movie and TV series so I already knew what was going to happen for the most part. I did chuckle out loud when one of the characters accused Johnny Smith of starting a fire with his mind, just like in "Carrie." Nice little bit of self-promotion slipped in, Stephen :) I will definitely keep my mind open to reading other Stephen King books.
