Over the past few years I have been making a concerted effort to read many of the classics. This one definitely falls into that category, and I've never read any Austen. Into the TBR pile it goes!

This appears as though it may have been a school book at one time. It has the name Megan Nal crossed out, with Victoria Hall - 410-E, and Hilary Parker written below it.

I picked this up at the BookCrossing Convention from among the many (many, many!) books there; I'd read and loved it years ago - I even have all of Austen's novels in hard-cover - and I wanted to wild-release this somewhere else around town. But while I was wandering around with my arms full of books, another BCer spotted it and said she'd never read it, so I handed it over. And if I weren't so jet-lagged maybe I could even remember who it was... so she'd better journal this {grin}!

[Updated to add my comments]

I adore all of Austen's books, though Emma is not among my top three - those would be Persuasion, Sense and Sensibility, and Pride and Prejudice. But Emma is another lovely (and lively) variation on Austen's theme of the trials and tribulations of finding a suitable mate. Here, unlike most of the other books, the heroine is not impoverished nor in particular need of a husband; instead, she amuses herself by attempting to make matches for her friends. How much success she has... well, that's part of the story, as is the question of whether she'll find romance herself. [Hey, it's Austen; what do you think!] Very funny, often very snarky, with some beautiful scenes of the kind of social embarrassments that ring all too true - definitely recommended!

I have never read this and I'm sure the book is way better than the movie! Thanks for sharing,Gory Details!

This book finally got to the top of my TBR pile and I read it. The small print was a bit tedious but I enjoyed it. At times, I wanted to take Emma by the shoulders and give her a good shake but she did redeem herself in the end! It is difficult to relate to the class system and the way that "ladies" of the Victorian era spent their lives. Some of the characters are very real (there's a Mrs. Elton in every community!)
I enjoyed "Pride and Prejudice" more but this one is quite funny! Jane Austen always seems to be mocking the society in which she lived.
