Pearl S. Buck presents a graphic view of the China that was -- when the last emperor reigns, and the vast political and social upheavals of the twentieth century were distant rumblings for the ordinary people. This moving, epic story of the honest farmer Wang Lung and his selfless wife O-lan is must reading for those who would fully appreciate the sweeping changes that have occurred in the lives of the Chinese people.

Stopped in at the Wellness Institute today to release some books, and pick up a few things I've been wanting to read. I haven't read anything by Buck since I was in grade school (a while ago). Looking forward to this- thanks for making it available.

I realize this is an incredible piece of prize-winning literature, known the world over, yet I find it to be somewhat stifling. I've gotten to the part where O-lan has given birth to "just a slave" (their daughter after three sons), and the overall depressing tone of the poverty (emotional poverty, too) is just bringing me down.
