Apparently, I have had this book for a couple years without making a journal entry for it.

I read this years ago when I was a young girl. It was a paperback book on my father's bookshelf. The front cover said it was 'the greatest novel of our time'. If that was so, I decided, I should read it. More than 600 pages about the life of a bitter man because he had a club foot, unlike any book I'd ever read in my short life. (I still don't know what a club foot looks like.)

This book was probably the best book I have read so far this year. What a richness of characters and language. I loved the development of Philip Carey, the main character. His stupidity and his final happiness. Definitely a 1,001-book.

As far as I can remember, this will be my first book by this writer. I look forward to reading it very much!

Journal Entry 8 by Boekentrol at Leeuwarden, Fryslân (Friesland) Netherlands on Thursday, January 6, 2022
This book has been sitting on my shelf for ages. I had no idea what to think of it, what to expect and therefore avoided it altogether.
Silly decision, but... I can now say I've read it.

And more than that: I liked it. At times I grew very impatient with the main character, his indecisiveness, his decisions that eventually turned out wrong. I kept reading however, wanting to learn whether things would get better, whether he would finally find happiness.
If he did? Just read it yourself 😉
