blackbird house

I liked this dreamy evocation of a house and the people who have lived in it. It's not quite a novel; not quite a short story collection; more a linked set of tales. Alice Hoffman's writing - as in all her later books - is pared down and her interest is in finding the magical in the everyday. This is a lovely little piece of myth-making.

Picked up at the Bookfestival Meet Up on Sunday. Hello Nell-Lu :o)
A very beautifully written story of a house in Cape Cod and the people who have lived in it.Totally agree it's quite magical and I finished the book feeling quite happy and touched by it.

Postman just delivered a parcel today and opened it to find a book that has been on my wishlist for quite a while. Thanking Kirstin/Kinedi for searching a home out for the book. Look forward to reading it.
I found it a bit difficult to get into the story at first, almost fairy-tale like. Some of the end of that chapter/tales I found to be a bit abrupt and left me wanting more explanation, but a nice enough read. Thanks for passing it on.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Sending this on to the winner of Easter sweepstake, run by 'starflash'. I am hoping this is a new author for the recipient to try.
Thank you! I have read one book by Alice Hoffman, The Ice Queen and I think there may be another one sitting on the book mountain, I'm sure I'll enjoy this when I get the chance to read it.
I enjoyed reading this, I've just spent 2 weeks in New England the last four days on Cape Cod. I could "see" the house and its surroundings in my minds eye. I have been to Provincetown and walked along Milk Street in Boston so this was really brought to life for me.
I do wish each story had been a bit longer so that we found out what had hapened in the end, but all in all a goodread.

"Surrounded by fields of sweet peas and fruit vines in rural Massachusetts sits Blackbird House, a haunting house to the women who live in her. A raging storm in 1778 sees John Hadley and his sons lost at sea. From then, the lives of the inhabitants are tangled together, until present day when the history of the house, its ghosts and the tragedies yet to come arrive at a dramatic climax."

The book consists of different stories involving various people inhabiting one way or another the blackbird house of the title, in a time span of around two centuries.
I enjoyed some stories better than others. At first I found that the writting style needed some getting used to and occasionally something was off, not sure what. I often felt that I wanted more of a story. Sometimes the author seems to touch on magic realism, while on other instances the prose seems more matter of fact. But in general the book moved fast and easily and I liked the setting and most of the characters.
Overall this was a very decent read and I enjoyed it. First time reading anything from Alice Hoffman and I'd like to check more of her work to form a more definite opinion...
Thanks once again for sharing Harobed82 and everyone !

In a hurry to post the book, I forgot to journal my thoughts. I really enjoyed the stories. They are beautifully written and I appreciate the quiet sense of sadness.

To Vilda who picked it out of the Women in Fiction VBB. Enjoy!
Safely with me! Looking forward to reading this one.
An enjoyable read. I am a fan of these linked stories and their different voices. But still I get the feeling this one won't linger as some novels do.
To a fellow bookcrosser after completing a reading challenge. Enjoy!
Thank you all. Now I read it.
