I've tried reading some books by Ken Follett before and I haven't liked them, they've been all about cold war stuff, and that doesn't really interest me that much.
This one on the other hand seems really interesting.

Synopsis
"The Pillars of the Earth" tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known; of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect - a man divided in his soul; of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame; and of a struggle between good and evil that will turn church against state, and brother against brother. A spellbinding epic tale of ambition, anarchy, and absolute power set against the sprawling medieval canvas of twelfth-century England, this is Ken Follett's historical masterpiece. 'Enormous and brilliant ...this mammoth tale seems to touch all human emotion - love and hate, loyalty and treachery, hope and despair. This is truly a novel to get lost in' - "Cosmopolitan". 'A historical saga of such breadth and density ...Follett succeeds brilliantly in combining hugeness and detail to create a novel imbued with the rawness, violence and blind faith of the era' - "Sunday Express".

I have just started reading this book and I'm 100% hooked. this one will go into my PC once I've read it. I have bought a couple of used copies online for BC purposes.
I love Amazon.co.uk's used books-department :)

Journal Entry 3 by Sobergirl from Turku, Varsinais-Suomi / Egentliga Finland Finland on Sunday, December 30, 2007
Rarely have I been this absorbed in a book.
This is just a fantastic piece of literature!
I've been dreaming at night about cathedral building ever since I started reading this book. I usually don't read almost 1000 pages in English this fast. I've ben reading every free moment i've had.

Interesting people, forbidden love affairs, backstabbing.. this story has everything one can ever demand of a good adventure!

I'm so happy I started reading this book eventhough my previous experiences with books by Mr. Follett haven't been that good. I don't like thrillers about the cold war, spies, cloning.. etc etc.. I like thrilers about cathedral building in the 1100s in England :)

This book is now in my PC,reliable BC'ers may however borrow it

I have ordered a special signed copy of the sequel, World Without End. It should arrive really soon. Can't wait to start reading it!

Thank you for bringing this out of your pc to RABCK to me :) This would proberly be a book I would ignore usally but my sister gave me the second book to this and assures me its great! She didn't reaise she was reading a sequel when she brought it and as I hate starting out of order so wanted to get hold of the first one. And from what sobergirl has written it looks set to be a gooden. Thanks again :)

What a wonderful, wonderful book! I never thought a book about building a cathrdral could be so intresting! Aliena was by far my favorite character, I felt so bad for her when everything kept going wrong. All through the book I just wanted William Hamleigh to die! Not enough bad things happened to him. I found it hard to warm up to Ellen maybe becuase she didn't really like Philip, who I couldn't help but love! I can't really write much more without spoiling the book but I can't wait to read the sequel. As part of my things to do in 2010 I'm no longer keeping books more than a month. I shall see who is wishing for this book and send it on :)

What a stunningly interesting book, I could hardly bear to put it down! So much history, architecture and information about the lifestyle of the times, written in such a way as to hold the attention throughout.
I'm now looking out for the sequel, World Without End.

I was talking to someone yesterday about this book (on a church visit where I examined the pillars and arches with great care!) and will now lend it to him. He might even join bookcrossing!.

I was lent this by someone who recommended it. I enjoyed it so much that I read some of it again, though it's not a small book by any means. I'll give it back to her soon.

Thank you so much. I did look for you at the Uncon to thank you personally but I was a little overwhelmed with it being my first one. Looking forward to reading it. I love your postcard too!

This book is fantastic! Thank you so much for giving it to me. It really was a "could not put down". It went everywhere with me in the hope that I might have time to read a little. I felt involved in everyone's life and felt their pain. Like redfox5, I hated William Hamleigh and kept wishing he would die. I also love architecture and the descriptions of the cathedral building were just fascinating. The heights they could build to with only wooden scaffolding and man handling! I will gladly pass this on with huge recommendations.

Dropped through the letterbox yesterday, what a lovely suprise!

Thank you, Earthcaroleann. I've had this on my wishlist for some time and am really looking forward to reading it.

Journal Entry 20 by Izzles at Southampton, Hampshire United Kingdom on Thursday, August 18, 2011
I have mixed feelings about this book. The premise of the story is interesting and I did enjoy the descriptions of medieval England but I found the writing quite poor in places and some of the actions and words of the characters just felt too 21st century. Follet is guilty of overwriting and the book could easily have been reduced by a few hundred pages.

Despite my criticisms I found it quite enjoyable and it was a good summer read, but nothing more than that.
