This journal is going on another journey in my Banned Books Bookbox. Scroll down to see the rules and shipping order for the new box.

This journal will be traveling with my Shiny Things Bookbox.

Please feel free to use a few pages of the journal to express yourself. :)

This is a bookbox for books that have something shiny on the cover (down to the smallest detail), have a word in the title or subtitle that refers to something shiny, or have an author's name that refers to something shiny.

Examples:

Title on the book's cover is in shiny gold lettering
Author's last name is "Gold"
Book's title is Jewel
There's a picture on the cover of something that would be shiny in real life.

Rules:
1. Keep the box no longer than 2 weeks.
2. Journal when you receive the box. Include which books you're adding and removing. Change the box status to "traveling" when it's been shipped out.
3. NO MORE THAN 5 ROMANCE NOVELS IN THE BOX at any time.
4. Let me know if you see an unreliable bookcrosser's name on the participant list.
5. I strongly recommend delivery confirmation, but it's not required.

This box made it home today!

A big thank you to all of the participants for keeping the box moving.

It came home STUFFED with 25 books! I really enjoyed the entries in the journal--one of the most interesting journals I've ever gotten back.

Most of the books that made their way back home to me aren't really my cup of tea, but have no fear! They will help stock my OBCZ and hopefully find their way into the hands of some new bookcrossers.

Journal Entry 20 by jenptcfan from Mechanicsville, Virginia USA on Wednesday, October 1, 2008
This is going in my Banned Books Box to help keep track of the box's whereabouts and contents.

Rules:
1. The theme is banned/challenged books. There are multiple websites devoted to lists of banned books. A couple of websites I've found are The Forbidden Library and the ALA List. If you can provide a website that says a book you're including in the box has been banned or challenged, it's welcome in the box. Please include info. about why the book was banned in your journal entry. It's always interesting to see the reasoning behind the bannings.

Any book by an author who has been challenged is also welcome.

2. Keep the box no longer than 2 weeks. The goal is to pick the books you want and replace them with an equal or greater number of books. Don't keep the box with the intention of reading some of the books before passing the box on. Keep it moving.

3. Please pay attention to the quality of the books you include. I don't mind mildly worn books, but if your books are falling apart, moldy, stinky, etc., please don't include them in this box.

4. Let me know if you see a staller on the participant list.

5. Delivery confirmation is a FANTASTIC idea. I won't make it mandatory, but please use it if you can (esp. if you're a new Bookcrosser or are sending the box to someone you're unfamilar with).

I picked up the bookbox in the mail today. Very excited to look inside and see what is waiting for me. Already I'm thinking I'd like to reread The Color Purple and Lovely Bones is looking interesting, but I've barely looked so I'll see what else. I'll let you know what I do take and what I add for sure before I send this on.
I'm sorry it took me so long to pick up but the post office is on campus and the package pickup window is only open till 4pm. Also, I just realized there is a journal in here. What fun! I love reading the earlier entries. I'll be sure to make one of my own. I've pm'd bluestocking88 for their address.

Journal Entry 31 by AtHomeGoddess from Fresno, California USA on Tuesday, May 18, 2010
Received the Banned Books Bookbox and Journal last night!

I have read a lot of these books already - I am happy to say! But I will pull a couple that I haven't made time to read and then put some new books in. I will journal again when I get ready to release and list the books I have put in.

Journal Entry 32 by AtHomeGoddess at Fresno, California USA on Sunday, June 13, 2010
I am having trouble with the website, so I am using this to let people know that I have released the bookbox to the next person on the list, Hyphen8.

Journal Entry 33 by winghyphen8wing at Honolulu, Hawaii USA on Monday, June 21, 2010
This box arrived yesterday (Saturday)..just as I'm getting ready to go on vacation for a couple of weeks.

I'll try to get it out before I leave, but it may not get mailed until after I get back - after the 4th of July.

I'm often surprised at what shows up on banned book lists - some of the books in the box were expected, but others were not. I know it's sometimes hard to find the reasons why a book was banned/challenged, but I always wonder...

BTW, it looks like the journal might originally have had a buckle on the front in addition to the green ribbon, but the buckle isn't there now. :(

Journal Entry 34 by winghyphen8wing at Honolulu, Hawaii USA on Friday, July 23, 2010
Sorry to have held on to this for so long - first I went on vacation, then work has been really crazy ever since I got back.

I will get this box sent out tomorrow (Friday) or Saturday.

The box was getting sort of battered, so I replaced it with a slightly smaller one. I took out 7 registered books plus one unregistered book, and am adding 16 paperbacks.

Taking out:

Paradise by Toni Morrison (hardback)
Dracula by Bram Stoker
1984 by George Orwell
Matilda by Roald Dahl
Patriot Games by Tom Clancy (hardback)
Cell by Stephen King (hardback)
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O'Brien
The Indian in the Cupboard by Lynne Reid Banks

Putting in:

So Far From the Bamboo Grove by Yoko Kawashima Watkins
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey
The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury
Lord of the Flies by William Golding
The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman
The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier
Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle
The Sign of the Chrysanthemum by Katherine Paterson
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling
James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl
Animal Farm by George Orwell
The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
The Austere Academy by Lemony Snicket
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling
The Red Pony by John Steinbeck
Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich

Since the box is going to Korea next, I thought maybe Supertalya might want to take a few extra books out of the box to put in her OBCZ for servicemembers...

Oh, yes, and I felt bad for the buckle-less journal, so I gave it a new tie.

Journal Entry 35 by winghyphen8wing at Honolulu, Hawaii USA on Saturday, July 24, 2010

Released 13 yrs ago (7/24/2010 UTC) at Honolulu, Hawaii USA

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

The banned book box is finally on its way again, this time to Korea by way of media mail, thanks to the US military. I just want to apologize again for keeping it for so long - I hate it when life gets in the way of bookcrossing! :p

I'm going by memory since the box is now in the hands of the USPS, but I think these starter books are still in the box:

The Last of the Wine by Mary Renault
A Separate Peace by John Knowles
The Pearl by John Steinbeck
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Captain Underpants and the Wrath of the Wicked Wedgie Woman by Dav Pilkey
Billy Budd by Herman Melville
Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Curtis
Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs
Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder
The Heart of a Woman by Maya Angelou
Then Again, Maybe I Won't by Judy Blume
The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M. Auel

Journal Entry 36 by Supertalya at Itaewon, Soul-t'ukpyolsi South Korea on Thursday, September 2, 2010
The box took the slow boat to me. It was mailed off in July and I just received it.

I am taking out:
Captain Underpants
Bud, Not Buddy
So Far from the Bamboo Grove
The Austere Academy
The Sign of the Chrysanthemum
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

I am putting in:
Beijing Doll
Belinda
American Psycho

I am taking out more than putting in because Hyphen8 was nice enough to donate extra since I am trying to start a OBCZ at the USO in Seoul, Korea.
I didn't see a journal.

I will PM Canticlelost ASAP to get her address and send this off.

Are you sure you want to delete this item? It cannot be undone.
