The blurb:
"It was like being in the presence of a snake, first hissing its presence and then coiled in readidness. I didn't dare turn my back or take my eyes off her. I stood very still. I let go of my fight-or-flight defense and decided to play dead. If you run from a bear, it gives chase. That's the nature of the beast. Likewise a snake. If I moved, she might strike.
When her elderly neighbour Gus has an accident, Kinsey Millhone is relieved that his niece organizes a nurse for him. A background check on Solana Rojas doesn't turn up anything suspicious. But Kinsey's not convinced - especially when Gus seems to be getting worse under his nurse's tender care.
Realizing that her neighbourly concern isn't going to get her past the front door, Kinsey turns to more unorthodox methods to step up her investigation. And gets far more than she bargained for ...
Not only is Solana not who she seems to be, but she's more than able to play Kinsey at her own game. Suddenly the tables are turned and it's Kinsey who's on the wrong side of the law ..."

There were two themes running through this book and I didn't feel that either was resolved to my satisfaction. However, it was an enjoyable book if one enjoys reading about psychopathic fraudsters. I sat up late to finish this one ...
It is perhaps a salutary lesson into what can happen if someone steals your identity.

Posted to HeatherA today. Enjoy ...
Received from pinkozcat in todays mail.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Not one of the best Sue Grafton books I've read but still I enjoyed it, this one took a little longer to get to the 'can't put down' stage but once there I was eager to get to the end.
Will mail to alinci-g on Monday 17th December.
Will mail to alinci-g on Monday 17th December.
Arrived earlier in the week but I was so overwhelmed with school finishing for the year that I am only just joirnalling it. Thank you. I will start on it when I sit down for lunch soon.
Almost a 10! I loved it. Read all through Christmas Eve (almost) and finished it Christmas afternoon. So now I will try to contact Hawkette to pass it on.
Hawkette wanted to go further down the list so I have sent it on to LadyIndigo today after a long wait since I put it aside and forgot it. Apologies to everyone concerned. And many thanks to pinkozcat for this chance to read it.

a scary lesson in identity theft and the evil lurks in this world
and a story about manipulation
the secondary story was interesting- a little unbelievable in the lack of investigation that is done in cases such as this one (spoiler if i tell you all!) - it makes for good storylines for crime writers that their hero/ines can discover the truth
i don't think it ended very well - seemed to be written in a rush - or grafton's word limiter forced the abrupt style to the final moments of the story
i keep forgetting these are still in late 1980s where personal computers haven't quite made their mark, nor mobile phones - tho i suspect kinsey will hang onto that faithful smith-corona til she can no longer find parts & ribbon to fit...
it is a credit to grafton that she is able to write her stories with conviction set 20 years ago
i agree with heathera, not her best but overall a good read
many thanks pinkozcat for sharing with us

Received this book in the post via a bookring. Will read as soon as I can then post it to the next person.
foxygirl - this is just in case you didn't receive my PM. The next person on the list is Hawkette and you will need to send her a PM or email her off-line and ask her for her address so that you can post the book on to her.
Cheers - minnie/pinkozcat

This was my first Sue Grafton book. I often really enjoy books that examine the criminal mind but this one took a while to get going and was not a real page turner for me (usually if I stay up to 3am reading, then its a top choice, but this one didn't inspire late night sessions)
Have now posted onto Hawkette.

Arrived with me in Melbourne this week. Thanks pinkozcat, and foxygirlACT.
Will be added to the BCAUS Grafton bookray lists as a missing link in the alphabet!
