Synopsis:
Harry Hole, drunkard, loner and brilliant detective is reassigned to surveillance after a high profile mistake. He's bored by his new job until a report of a rare and unusual gun being fired sparks his interest because of its possible links to Neo Nazi activity. Then a former soldier is found with his throat cut. Next, Harry's former partner is murdered. Why had she been trying to reach Harry on the night her head was smashed in? The investigation leads Harry to suspect that the crimes have their roots in the battlefields of Eastern Front during WWII. In a quest that takes him to South Africa and Vienna, Harry finds himself perpetually one step behind the killer. He will be both winner and loser by the novel's nail-biting conclusion. He's your judge, jury and executioner... And he must be stopped.

About the Author:
Jo Nesbø, musician, economist and author of the best-selling series featuring Detective Harry Hole, has won many prizes for his novels, including the Glass Key, the Riverton Prize and the Norwegian Bookclub prize for best ever Norwegian crime novel. His first novel to be published in English was The Devil's Star, which sold more than 100,000 copies in Norway alone. He lives in Oslo.

A good Norwegian crime fiction author. I bought this translation into English at a half price book sale at Ark Egertorget today. Will share it with a friend to start its travels! :)

The Norwegian ministry of Culture should give a prize to shimi for disseminating Norwegian crime novels abroad. :) Thank you for this! It's funny, because I actually found out about this author a couple of weeks ago... and now, magically, I get a book! ;-) I'm spoilt.

I had this book in the mail today. When I opened the package and read your letter I was a little confused, as I was sure I never had the book on my wishlist. But now I read your release note and alas, the book wasn't supposed to be send to me. :)

I will seek the opportunity and read it and I promise to send it on to fee_gee after I'm done.

Thank you, Bjorg! This way the book gets to travel some more ;)

I started reading the book but crime fiction is really not something I'm into. I couldn't get into the story so I stopped reading after a hundred pages and will now send the book on to fee_gee who was supposed to receive the book anyways and will most likely enjoy it more.

Thank you so much for this - I was so excited when I opened it. I like reading series in order and I've been collecting these as I see them in charity shops but the first book has always been elusive. I can get started now!

Journal Entry 11 by wingearthcaroleannewing at Falkirk, Scotland United Kingdom on Tuesday, February 3, 2015
I didn't start the series with this one because although it was the first book published in the UK, it is actually the third book in the series. So having finally found 1 & 2, I can get around to 3. Unfortunately I didn't think it was worth the wait. In fact, I nearly gave up in the first 100 pages. Harry Hole hardly appeared and it was a story of the soldiers in the trenches in WW2. I wanted a crime book not a war story. I was so disappointed I'm thinking of not bothering to read the rest of the series.

Thanks for the surprise, earthcaroleanne. I will start on books 1 & 2 some time soon. I hope I'm not as disappointed as you were.

Well, the story was interesting enough, but it went on for way, way, way too long. I almost gave up several times but I wanted to see where it was going. Quite convoluted & I found it very hard to keep track of which old man was which - there are a lot of them. Quite confusing & could benefit from having a good edit & cutting out at least a third of the 600p.

Disappointing really as I though the first book, The Bat, was very good reading.
