I got this at a BC Meetup tonight. The original BCer hadn't registered it yet, so I'm registering it here. Will read and re-release.

I meant to post this to my journal a while ago. Here is a copy of a letter I wrote to the author immediately after I finished Hannah's Gift.

Dear Maria,

You don't know me, but today I started reading Hannah's Gift. I sat down with it, and kept reading until I reached the last page. I laughed and cried, and in the end realized that I needed to share this with you. In general, I read many books and skim through the information about the author. Never before have I had any yearning or urgent need like this to share something with the person behind the pages.

I received your book by chance - fate, perhaps. I just recently joined an online community, BookCrossing (http://www.bookcrossing.com), and planned to attend a Meet Up locally. I suffer from anxiety disorders, and at the last minute was hesitant about going by myself. In a spontaneous act, I decided to go and meet others. Lo and behold, someone at that table had read Hannah's Gift and was offering it up to share. I looked at it, and figured I'd take it to share with someone else - I try not to read "depressing" books because I react so strongly to the feelings. Today, while looking for a new book to read, Hannah's Gift peeked out at me with its white cover and bright red shoes.

One of the people my father grew up with is Richard ("Dick") [last name edited out]. To my dad, he was a best friend and partner in crime, along with the Best Man at my parents' wedding. To many with cancer, he is the last hope. He is one of the top oncologists worldwide, and deals with the people who have been told that there is no more hope.

When I finished the book, I realized that I have to send it to Dick. I don't know why, but I will include a note with this story, and ask him to pass it on to someone. Someone out there is waiting to hear Hannah's tale. Thank you for sharing it.

This is the kind of book that makes you want to go out and leave a mark on the world. The author, in her response, stated:

Thank you for your beautiful response to "Hannah's Gift". I was deeply moved by your story - and grateful for the fateful grace in it.

Please offer my thanks to the people at BookCrossing too. They are contributing to something wonderful and worthy in the writing/publishing community.

Blessings,

Maria
