Journal Entry 1 by ScottishHoosier from Westhill, Scotland United Kingdom on Wednesday, October 31, 2007
No. 30 of the Penguin 70s.
I see I didn't make a journal entry when I read this. This is a selection of short stories, mostly about the author's teen years, anyhow, it feels rather autobiographical. As I pretty much grew up in the 1970s, it is rather interesting. The one thing I can't identify with is the narrator's/author's lesbianism (as I'm not one, I have nothing against lesbians). It seems rather important to her to write about it.

Caught this when visiting Aberdeen last week.
This was a fabulous little read. Ali Smith shows herself as the master of short stories in this collection. My favourite was The Theme of Power and had a ring of truth about two teenage girls making their way in the world (and having a brush with the dark side of human nature). I am not a 70s child myself (I didn't make an appearance until the mid-80s) but these stories will struck a chord with future generations and beyond.
I seem to be going through a phase of lesbian literature (having finished my first Sarah Waters) which is rather liberating. Although I identify as heterosexual, I can empathise with the women of Second Wave Feminism who felt more comfortable forming sexual relationships with women. After all, we are rather fabulous :)
