An amazing epic. Slow to start but completely draws you in. It's a very long book but the pages just flew by. I could have lived without the pages on architecture in the 1100s but there was some purpose to them, rather than rambling.
My only real complaint is the sex scenes, which seemed largely unnecessary and the rape scene which I found distasteful to read - I can't quite put my finger on it, but it seemed to be treated not quite how I expected. (I realise this is quite vague but I'm not entirely sure why it made me feel uncomfortable!)
I saw advertising for a sequel whilst reading this, which I will no doubt seek out at some point.

Quite a long book! To say the least but an interesting story that spanned a life time or two. I thought some of the catherdral/church design could have been cut out to bring the books length down a bit, and found myself skipping through some of the longer passages but I was interested in the main characters and kept at it till the end.
