A lovely novel by one of Norways leading authors.
"In 1948, fifteen-year-old Trond spends a summer in the country with his father. The unexpected events that come to pass alter his life forever.
An early morning adventure out stealing horses leaves Trond confused when his friend Jon suffers a sudden breakdown. Behind this scene, he will discover, lies a personal tragedy: the first incident in the gradual destruction of the two boys' families.
As an old man, living in an isolate part of Norway, Trond chances upon a character from the fateful summer who stirs up painful memories and forces him to look back at his past."

Thanks for this Christmas present, Haugtussa! I have not previously read any of this author's work, so am looking forward to reading it.
Thank you very much for your kindness :)
It is only now that I realise that I did not make a journal entry when I finished reading this book in January this year (terrible BCer!). I really did enjoy this book - it was an interesting tale of a man reflecting on his life, particularly one event that changed his family situation when he was young.
Thanks for sending this to me, Haugtussa :)

This arrived in the post today. Thanks so much, ukcanaus! I'm reading another book at the moment, but I'll read this one next (my mom might read it in the meantime).
I just finished this book this morning. It's really beautifully written and a very intriguing story. I was a bit wary when I realised it was about an old man looking back on his life as I tend to find those types of books either depressing or boring, but Trond's story is so interesting it really draws you in!
I've already PM'd the next person for her address, so as soon as I hear from her I'll send this on.
Oh, and my mom did read it and enjoyed it, but getting her to write journal entries is always a struggle :P

Oh god... I don't know what's wrong with me. This is the 2nd time this year that I forgot to journal the receipt of a book! So sorry! I received it a couple of weeks ago and am in the middle of reading it, so it should go on its journey again next week:)

Ok, managed to finish this last night already:)
I haven't read many books of Norwegian literature but the ones that I have read all have in common being incredibly slow-paced. Same as this book. It was a good read and I liked Trond's character but at times I was bored, thinking the whole story could have easily been summed up in half the length of the book. I guess I have this problem with most books where the protagonist looks back on his/her life...

This was beautifully written. I read it slowly, a chapter each night as I felt it was a book that one needed to experience at a slow pace. I found myself thinking about how precious our time on earth is and how we should really treasure each moment of our lives. Thank you so much for sharing! I posted the book off this evening at 5pm our time. It should be with you by this time next week. I hope it travels well. xx
Thanks, Carole888, for sending this back to me last week; thanks to all participants for making this a successful bookring.
Sent as a RABCK today - this book is on the recipient's wishlist...

I loved this one. vivid discriptions of rural norway and just like a lot of good books, leaves a lot of questions unanswered.
