This book is written by Tash Aw, who was born in Taiwan and raised in Malaysia. He now lives in London, but considers himself a Malaysian because his parents are Malaysians. This is the first book written about Chinese Malaysians, and how life was for the Chinese in Malaysia during the 1940's, that became wildly popular among Malaysians, and internationally.

I'm sending this book to RikkiDD as part of a trade and because she has expressed her interest in authors abroad and reading about life abroad. I hope you enjoy this book, RikkiDD! Although it's set in the 1940's and not currently, it's still a very interesting look at Chinese Malaysians and the birth of Malaysia.

This book came really as a surprise. I totally forgot about it. The more was the joy to free it from the envelope.
Thanks for sending this book. As soon as I have read it I will write more about it.

This is the story of Jonny Lim, textile merchant, petty crook and inventor of the Amazing Toddy Machine, and his marriage to the beautiful Snow Soong.
In 1940, with the Japanese about to invade Malaysia, Jonny and Snow embark on their honeymoon to the mysterious Seven Maiden Islands, accompanied by a mercurial Japanese professor and Peter Wormwood, an Englishman adrift. Many years later, Wormwood looks back on this defining journey, while Snow's son goes in search of the truth of his mother and the infamous Chinese man she married.

The story is written from the view of Jonny's son, Snow - his mother and Peter Wormwood. So the reader gets a view into the life and carackter of Jonny Lim. But everyone can only se the situation from his/her side of view and no one can see behind everything in Jonny's life.

The story not only gives a view into differnt charackters also into the life of 1940s Malaysia and a bit of history.
This was really a very interessting read. Thanks again for sending me this book. I will set it free, maybe at the BC-World convention in Amsterdam in April 2010.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

The book will start its travel again at the Bookcrossing World Convention 2010 in Amsterdam.
