Picked out of a passing book box. I have actually read this book - similar to the Ladies Detective Agency but set in 1920s London, a gentle mystery conducted by Maisie Dobbs, a gentle but determined character. I do like Maisie Dobbs as a character. The book itself was OK, although quite a saga to build up the background to the story and characters. I do look forward to reading the next in the series! I picked this book out of the box to pass on to Reetpetite, who I think will like it.

Given to me by jazz-ee2. Thanks very much, it looks good.

Synopsis
Young, feisty Maisie Dobbs has recently set herself up as a private detective. Such a move may not seem especially startling. But this is 1929, and Maisie is exceptional in many ways.Having started as a maid to the London aristocracy, studied her way to Cambridge and served as a nurse in the Great War, Maisie has wisdom, experience and understanding beyond her years. Little does she realise the extent to which this strength of character is soon to be tested. For her first case forces her to uncover secrets long buried, and to confront ghosts from her own past!In Maisie, Jacqueline Winspear has created a character that readers will immediately take to their hearts. Her first case combines a gripping investigation with a moving portrait of love and loss. It marks the beginning of a wonderful new detective series.

Really good read. This book was mainly about Maisie Dobbs' history.
Thanks for introducing me to a new author jazz-ee2. I've bought another 'Maisie Dobbs' novel.

This is going in the 'books set in London' collection for the BC Con.

Picked this book up from the book buffet table at the 2008 BookCrossing Anniversary Convention in London, England. Thanks for passing this book on!

This book caught my eye at the BC Convention as I am a fan of Anne Perry murder-mysteries that take place in London, England at the time of Jack-the-Ripper, and this mystery novel appeared to be set in a similar time/locale. Stayed for a 2-week holiday in England following the Convention and this was one book I read while I was there. Overall, it was a 'gentle' mystery but I definitely did enjoy this book and my introduction to a new character in Maisie, as well as a new Author. There were a few "twists & turns" that I didn't anticipate and this first novel by Jacqueline Winspear provided the background details of Maisie Dobbs which will set the stage for future novels in this series, I'm sure.

I intended to leave this book for my mother-in-law to read, however couldn't quite finish it by the time I had to leave for the airport, so finished reading on the flight back to Canada. So now this little book has travelled across the ocean and is ready for new adventures in a new land!

picked up at bookcrossing meet-up, plan to read and release for one of the many challenges I compete in. Also a new author for myself, I enjoyed it immensely. There is such a stark contrast with the rights of women today and in the early 1900's. At that time there was such a status difference between the rich and titled to the working class. The Great War as you will see in this book helped break down the barriers, I guess that would be only Great thing about that terrible War.
